Happy New Year!!! Gosh I miss you guys!! I took a little breather from social media and blogging the last week or so but I am back! I hope you all had the MOST wonderful Holiday week! We truly had THE best Christmas in our new home. Simple and easy and just perfect. I didn’t stress myself out like I tend to do with making everything perfect and it was even better that way. We had a quiet Christmas morning at home opening Santa and then had my family over for breakfast which is our yearly tradition… (Post contains affiliate links)
That evening we even hosted our 10th annual family Christmas party! Each year since Addie was born we started having one big shindig at our house with my family AND his and it is SO much easier that way. We don’t have to even leave home on Christmas Day. I wasn’t sure we would be able to pull it off four weeks post move-in but we did it! And we made it our very first Christmas Day pajama party. Every year I try and torture everyone as much as possible with a game and I force everyone to play ;-). This time we played “Minute to Win It” games and it was seriously SO much fun. I got most of my ideas from HERE. I literally have not laughed that hard in a LONG time…
And then last Thursday Mark had ACL surgery. No fun AT ALL to say the least. So I have been mommy + nurse + man of the house for the last five days. And it has pretty much sucked. I swear that taking the dog out in the freezing rain has been the worst part. The surgery went great but the recovery hasn’t been the easiest. Not to mention the part where we found out that he cannot drive for 4-5 WEEKS!!! Not exactly how we planned to start 2017 but we will survive.
So on to 2017. And those New Years resolutions. This year rather than “resolutions”, I have decided to focus on #GOALS. Not just goals but realistic expectations and steps to making those goals reality.
But first, please excuse me while I diverge… So I want to share a story. As you may have read on my blog over the last month during our big move, we have had some setbacks. From our basement flooding to our sewer line backing up to our countertop busting. Everything seemed to hit at once. And it seemed as though every time we told our crazy stories, we kept hearing the same thing… “Oh The Money Pit” LOL. As true as it may seem at first thought, we literally had ZERO problems during the ENTIRE restoration. ZERO. And we completely finished a 6,000 sf home from top to bottom… from new plumbing to new electrical to new everything. It went so amazingly well that once we were finished, we were ready to start something new. We literally love doing stuff like this that much. Yet in the back of our minds we knew we needed to focus on other things… our kitchen/bath company’s new fabrication facility/showroom, our flipping business we put on halt during our restoration, spending more time with our kiddos… you get the idea. But we kind of both have this disease where we feel like we can and we WANT to take on the world.
So back to those setbacks… Five days post move-in our marble countertop busted, our basement flooded, our sewer line busted in two places (happened in years past but we just discovered it then) and Winnie busted open her chin and had stitches. All within five days. We were both like “what the hell?!?” Is it bad luck? Does the house have bad karma? Then the following morning, Mark had breakfast with our preacher who is also a close friend of ours. Mark was jabbering about the “issues” we had and our preacher kept saying “I think God is trying to tell you something and you need to stop and listen”. Although we absolutely believe whole heartedly in those things, we both shrugged it off. It’s just been a stroke of bad luck. Mark and I spent some time praying on things and we both starting thinking along the same lines. Maybe we need to slow down a tad. Which is SO hard for people like us who LOVE what we do. But nah. It’s all good.
So for the next two days we kept hearing that voice “slow down” but we both kept thinking the same thing. We will slow down. One day. But not today. And then two days later Mark tore his ACL. And just like that we both said “God literally stopped you in your tracks. You weren’t listening to him so he did it himself.” Yes, maybe that all sounds a but crazy but the situations and the voices and the thoughts all just aligned in the craziest way and we both literally FELT the power. Felt the hand of God. And since that fateful torn ACL day, we have realigned our focus. Which is SO hard for people like us. SO hard when you are motivated and hardworking and absolutely LOVE what you do. We have prayed into what being “good busy” versus “too busy” means for us and have since made such great plans. Better plans than we even previously had for ourselves. Plans that would’ve never happened for us otherwise. And although these new plans all may still seem CA-razy busy, it is so much more doable for us. More sane and more reasonable.
SO after that insanely and hugely long testimony, here is what 2017 looks like for us… A focus of GOALS and what it takes to achieve each one. From placing a stronger emphasis on God in our home to focusing more on our company to achieving personal health and career goals… What do we need to do to achieve each of these? Rather than spinning wheels and running a million miles in every direction, what exact steps can we take to make those GOALS a reality.
- We have decided to no longer do renovations/flips far away. Sounds crazy obvious but this is HUGE for us. We have completed three flips over an hour and a half from our home in the last year and a half and were looking for a new one days before his ACL tear. Being so far from projects is crazy difficult to coordinate and complete in addition to everything else we have going on.
- We have decided to take time each day to STUDY. To spend less time on the “time suckers” like scrolling FB and IG for hours and literally STUDY. We downloaded a marriage Bible app on our phones, I just purchased several design books and Mark is studying to get his contractor’s license. AND I have even decided to possibly start studying later this year to get my realtor’s license to assist in furthering our flipping company.
- We are taking ONE “project” at a time and putting BOTH of our heads together to focus on each one. Rather than focusing on everything everyday, we are laying out a plan for each project and working efficiently together to complete each one. The “old us” would’ve started them all now. Every single one. Our first goal is to complete our kitchen/bath company’s new fabrication facility/showroom by the end of February. Next we are working to have my own personal (at home/at our showroom) design resource center and office completed by March/April. And then start on our NEW and SUPER EXCITING projects late Spring/early Summer. More on that below. And here is a tiny sneak peek at part of our new showroom…
- We are starting 2017 fresh with healthy AND reasonable eating and fitness goals. More on that in an upcoming post!
WHEW! I am sure you are tired of hearing me blab BUT I am excited to share what we have planned for 2017… First, as I said above, once our showroom is complete and operations are running smoothly, we are diving head first into tackling local (as in IN our city) small historic renovations/flips. Something we are SOO excited about! We even have someone possibly lined up for our first one! Second, I have decided to start praying into SLOWLY diving into what I’ve always dreamed of doing… STARTING MY OWN DESIGN FIRM. Yes, SLOWLY is the keyword. I am thinking hard and praying into what that company looks like but I cannot hold my passion back any longer. I am obsessed with design and am hoping to start tackling some large projects later this year. And surprisingly it all actually works seamlessly with our flipping company once I have a large and fully functioning office/resource center. And finally, I have 3,000 square feet of space that Mark built out for me at our new company location to do whatever I want with. Later this year of course. My wheels are spinning. So YES, busy is our thing but focusing on GOALS rather than BUSY is key for us. And yes, I will absoutely keep my blog through all of these upcoming projects. They will just give me that much more to blog about! As I have always said… My goal as a blogger is for my life/career to guide my blog rather than my blog guiding my life. So cheers to 2017 being the best year yet!
