Let the Historic “Fixer Upper” Journey Begin!

historic fixer upper

Happy Thursday! I sat down to write this blog post title and literally hit a brain block. I couldn’t even think of another short phrase other than “Fixer Upper” to describe our new journey. Most definitely NOT comparing or copying the amazingness of the Gaines empire! Just had to make that clear real quick! SO today I am SOOO excited to share the journey Mark and I have FINALLY officially embarked upon last Thursday. A journey we have dreamed of for some time now. A journey that has been brewing in our minds forever and was just waiting for the right place, the right time and the right situation to bring it all to life. All of which have finally come together. You see, we have flipped quite a few homes over the course of our sixteen year marriage. We have also fixed up and lived in quite a few more homes as well. Basically anytime we have had an “opening” in our schedule and a little extra money, we have found ourselves a “fixer upper”. Fast forward to late last year when a fire ignited in us both to focus all of our extra time and energy into fixing up our beautiful small Georgia town. One historic house at a time. Whatever and whenever we could get our hands on one.

Although we have always loved historic homes, literally almost bought our first one at the age of 20, AND have always loved our beautiful Southern town, it really took us purchasing “Our Historic Wonderland” and living downtown to become so super passionate about this place and this idea. As our town has really started to take shape and make some exciting changes over the last few years, our hearts have slowly led us to this idea of REALLY taking on Monroe. Really taking a chance on the homes that have sooo much potential but also need sooo much work. Turning homes that were once unkept rentals into permanent homes for families that love this small town just as much as we do. Homes that are walking distance to downtown just like ours. Homes that have character for DAAAYS just like ours. And homes that most others see as a project almost too big to tackle just like ours.

So our goal is simple… to restore and bring back to life at least ten homes a year. All historic and all in Monroe. As I said before, I can’t quite think of the correct “term” because we are hoping they won’t all be true flips. We hope to flip some and we also hope to work with homeowners some in finding and creating their dream homes. So here’s where I need your help… Help Mark and I think of what we are going to call our journey. The journey where Addison’s Wonderland takes on Monroe. Leave your ideas in the comments and hopefully we will fall in love with one and use it from here on out!

Now let’s chat about our very first “fixer upper” on this journey. Just one street over from ours on a beautiful street downtown is a home that I pass every single day. A home that I stare straight at from the stop sign as I leave home and take my girls to school each morning. A home that is among so many historic beauties yet has likely seen waaaay better days…

historic fixer upper

I can honestly say that Mark comes to me with 456,345 ideas per day. Literally. He is the hardest working dreamer I have ever met and he has so much passion and energy that he wants to take on the world. And probably would if given the chance. So he has become rather accustomed to proposing these 456,345 ideas a day to me and getting a quick no to at least 456,344. Yet this time I think he had not even completed his sentence when I said “YES! I want it!” He was kind of shocked to be honest. We both knew we wanted to find the perfect first fixer upper but had not even gotten a chance to go house shopping quite yet. A local real estate agent and friend, Nathan Purvis with ReMax, called and told Mark about this home and he reluctantly brought me the idea. It had been converted to a duplex at some point and rented out for years as far as we know and is in pretty terrible shape. Terrible being the understatement of the century. If you watch my Instastories you may have even seen the day we first toured the home. It is AWFUL y’all. Like gas mask awful. If you could smell through these images you would think we were nuts. But recreating awful is what we love most and tearing down a 100+ year old piece of history is just not an option in our book. So we teamed up with Nathan and officially purchased this home turned duplex last Thursday and we have even already begun demolition! To say that I am SOOOO excited to bring some Addison’s Wonderland to this beauty with so much potential is also the understatement of the century. So here you go! A “BEFORE” tour of our first project…

Love this idea. Love old homes getting new love. Question: I assume this is Monroe, Georgia? Isn’t Katie Bower (from bowerpower blog) fixing up a house there too? I think they mentioned one time their desire to help fix up the small town too. Just curious if I’ve got the same place. My mind was trying to connect some things but I wasn’t sure. If so, glad do many can help!

That way the idea is that there once was a wonderland that is still there somewhere and you are bringing it back. Then you would be free to go other places and just change the name of the town or project and still have the well known portion of the name there.

Congratulations and I can’t wait to follow you guys on this journey. Please, Please, Please blog as much as you can on this one !We want to follow every step! I grew up in Winder and now live in Jefferson so I can relate to your love for your small town. You have some great suggestions for names… my only suggestion would be to think big picture. I would not use the name Monroe in a name. Wonderland – YES! Take notes from the big guys who have gone before you… Chip and Joanna love their little town of Waco and they put it on EVERYTHING, but it’s not the name of their company or adventures. You may quickly buy up every thing in Monroe and reach out to outlying cites/counties and then you have pigeon holed yourself with a Monroe name. Just my little two cents. I think yall have something great here! You will be blessed I am sure!

When perusing antique malls for an old wood table When perusing antique malls for an old wood table becomes an album cover shopping trip turned gallery wall 💿 Ab and I spotted these fun, colorful covers while out one day and thought it just might be the perfect finishing touch in our historic fixer upper family room! With rose gold frames from @frameiteasy and a rather impromptu hanging method, this wall turned out to be the easiest, most colorful and fun project yet in our little brick cottage. P.S. Speaking of impromptu, John’s final addition looks rather staged but for Ab and I, we literally had NO CLUE it was coming and once Ab zoomed into the videos, we were dying 🤣🤣🤣 Oh John and his plants!
Ab here🖤… dropping in with a little update!! Ab here🖤… dropping in with a little update!! Watching old videos reminds me just how far this little house has come. My sweet dad helping me lay sub floor in the middle of summer after a long work day (which is just the TIP of the iceberg when it comes to the hours he put in on this house), the dance parties to keep from crying, and the bitter sweat memories of that year 💛 I have been DREAMING about this tub for quite some time, and @signaturehw brought all of those dreams to life. I’m just so stinking thankful. It is seriously the most beautiful tub I’ve ever seen... So much so that we have another gorgeous copper tub, from Signature, going in this week at a clients house! Where are my girls, who love a moody space, at???🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️🖤
Let's chat hardwood flooring... beautiful, durable Let's chat hardwood flooring... beautiful, durable, pet friendly, kid approved, scratch-and-dent resistant, germ resistant, worry free and practically indestructible… hardwoods by @bruceflooring that have no added chemicals, are engineered for high traffic and have a commercial strength warranty. Yep, that option actually exists, and yes, it is made in the USA with 100% real hardwoods. For all of the reasons listed above, I chose #Dogwood Engineered Hardwoods by #BruceFlooring in Sattler White Oak for our historic renovation and they turned out STUNNING! *TAP TO SEE THE FAMILY ROOM RENOVATION PROGRESSION* After once joking that I needed a hardwood flooring color that matched Cheerios crumbs, I've kind of stuck with that color-selection motto ever since, and they never disappoint! Lighter hardwoods (like this Dogwood by Bruce in Sattler White Oak) hide all the crumbs while keeping spaces light, bright and airy, (even with dark wall colors). Today on the blog, I’m sharing many more images and even more details! #sponsored
Who else loves pizelles??? I’ll be honest, these Who else loves pizelles??? I’ll be honest, these are a more recent discovery since marrying into an Italian family but they were an instant hit! They’re a traditional Italian waffle cookie that’s super easy to make with a CucinaPro Piccolo Pizzelle Baker and they can also be made into so much more… from ice cream sandwiches to cannolis! John’s favorite dessert is cannolis and this makes them super easy to make while Winnie loves a good ice cream sandwich and Addie and I usually go for the chocolate dipped with powdered sugar 😋 They’re incredibly simple and look way more impressive than the actual skill level which is perfect for me! 😉 Mix it up, press them cooked in 50 seconds and BOOM! Sharing the recipe and a few of our favorites ways to prepare them. P.S. the @Cucina.Pro pizelle baker is available on Amazon and I’ve linked it in my bio!

Simple White Hallway… BROUGHT TO LIFE ♥️ Wha Simple White Hallway… BROUGHT TO LIFE ♥️ What if quite possibly one of the most forgotten spaces in your home could become pure magic?!? After quite literally carving out this hallway amongst bedrooms for the new floor plan we gave our historic fixer-upper, I knew I wanted to make the new archer hallway a STAR! It’s the center of the entire home and can be viewed from pretty much every single room. First was the installation of this incredibly beautiful mural by @belartestudio last week and then today the three pendants I spray painted over the weekend. Who knew a hallway could be my favorite space in a home! 🥰 Linking the mural and the pendants on stories tonight!
When you fall in love with a mural and it inspires When you fall in love with a mural and it inspires an entire home 😍… Yep, one look at this @belartestudio landscape mural and the color story for our historic fixer upper came to life! Add in the fact that wallpapering together is mine and Ab’s friendship love language and it’s the project of our design dreams ♥️ Seriously though, you have GOT to see all of the @belartestudio beauties. We’ve already used several of their papers in design projects (sneak peeks at one will be on stories tomorrow!) and I keep trying to invent a use for one in our home too. They’re all STUNNING!!! P.S. Ab and her sound effects were ON POINT for this one! 🙌🏻🤣🥰
If our kiddos formed a band and needed an album co If our kiddos formed a band and needed an album cover 😉 Back in 2021, Ab @abigailbradl3y “took our kiddos to dinner” but instead snuck in the most incredible surprise photo shoot as a wedding gift. The images by @brianingramphoto were beyond STUNNING and we finally got around to framing and hanging one of my very favorites. Two years later 🤦🏻‍♀️ A true work of art that I will absolutely cherish forever and ever! Especially considering three of our four are off to college in what feels like no time 😭 P.S. All of the vases and florals are from @addisonswonderlandboutique and I’ve detailed and linked everything on the blog! Happy Weekend 💗💗💗
Already making a jot list of all the things that’ll get your kiddos off their devices and out the front door this Summer? I packed four Gel Blasters for Spring Break and they were a HIT! Kinda sorta almost more than the beach 🤦🏻‍♀️ Not even kidding when I say I think they went through more than 30,000 Gellets. In seven days. We loved them so much I got y’all a link (linked in my bio) and a discount code (BRITTANY10)! P.S. The Gellets are non-toxic and start to dehydrate after contact. Believe me… I wouldn’t have chanced messing up the backyard of our Spring Break Airbnb if they didn’t disappear quickly! #gelblaster #goplay #GelBlasterPartner
