The Office Reveal of the Century

Office Reveal 12L

The big office reveal has arrived!  Maybe it’s not quite the office reveal of the CENTURY but I know you must have been on the edge of your seat for at least the last 8 months, right?!?  Kidding, kidding, but I kind of have been!  I am not a procrastinator.  Like at all.  Whatsoever.  When I add something to my “to-do” list, it drives me crazy until I can mark it off the list.  And sometimes I even add things to my list that I have already completed, just to mark it back off.  Makes me feel extra accomplished.  Anyone else weird like that??

For some reason though, this room has taken me FORever to finish!  Well, this room and Winter’s big girl room.  Winter did have a finished nursery at first though so I have only been procrastinating that one for about a year.  THIS room on the other hand, we were at about 19 months, 2 days and 2 hours…  Approximately.

Overall I would blame the delay on the ladder.  I literally planned this entire room around my obsession with having a rolling ladder.  I mean, you just never know when I will absolutely HAVE to have a book on the very top shelf that I have already read and didn’t even remember we had until I started unpacking them two years later, and it would be a travesty to not be able to access it IMMEDIATELY!!  Okay, maybe it isn’t the absolute most practical part of our home.  But I have to say, it is pretty dang amazing.  So let’s revisit what used to be the official “eye-sore” of our main level…

BEFORE

In Progress

I get asked a lot about how to start a room design.  I start mine in an ever-ending array of ways.  Those ways always center around one main idea, color, furnishing or inspiration.  For this room, it was the striped ceiling and the rolling ladder.  Those two things I had on my “dream home check list” and both seemed most fitting for my office.  It is the first room on the right when you enter our home and I wanted a WOW statement right when you enter the door.  I guess as if our dining room and foyer stairs weren’t enough, we needed just ONE more!

Our home, as fun and colorful as it is, has one common theme…

Really Teal by Sherwin Williams

Choosing one main color to add in pops or bold statements throughout a home, is one great way to create a diverse, yet cohesive design plan.  If colors in other main living areas don’t coordinate with this main “theme color”, they aren’t right for our home.  My plain and simple rule of using color in a home.

The stripes were painted before we even moved in and this chandelier we had taken from the playroom in our previous home.  So both of these elements sat, lonely and in isolation, for quite some time before we added anything else to the space.  Eventually, I did start to work on the bookshelf and desk plan which I will discuss in much more detail in an upcoming post.  It ended up being an AMAZING diy!  So here’s the progress as of October, 2014…

After

And Voila!  I am SO excited to share the final room reveal!  We still have some small pieces of trim to add, cabinet hardware and other small details to finish but it is mostly complete.  This room is so ME and truly showcases my personal style.  I am so blessed to be able to have fun, be brave and push my creativity to the extreme in our home.  And I just love taking you all of this journey with me…

Not to fret…  much more on this room, the bookshelves, the design plan and the rolling ladder tutorial are all coming soon!  To save you from reading my blog for the next four days, I will share all of that in separate blog posts!  Room details and sources are mostly listed at the bottom of this post.  And as always, I frequented HomeGoods to fill my bookcases!  Enjoy!

Love it! Bright and fun! So that room is an open dining area right? or is it an actual closed off room with a door?

Thank you so so much! It is completely open on one side into our foyer and staircase and then a cased opening on the back opens up to a small hall way. Thanks!!

When will you be posting your DIY about the Rolling Ladder and Bookcases? I’ve been considering buying bookshelves with ladders like that recently but they are rather pricey. Your design with the bookcases and ladder is lovely!

Kathryn – I don’t think the blog post about the design plan and the rolling ladder tutorial for the office has been posted yet, or at least not that I can find either.

And dust off quite a few of John’s things as well from his architecture books to his dad’s antique rail car lantern along with some of our travel finds to make it OURS.
