EEEEEKKKKKK! Our… well, JOHN’S blood, sweat and more sweat… five year labor of love is BLOOMING! The roses didn’t quite take five years to bloom but from the first day that John started piddling with the idea of building this trellis to this day that it’s all complete and blooming has been right at FIVE YEARS. Back when John and I first started dating, he saw that my front gate was falling apart and started creating me a beautiful new work of art. And pretty much right alongside building the gate, he started planning out and working on the wood arches for a future trellis.
Aside from his handsome face and gorgeous arms ;-), the thing that made me send that first message on Match.com back in the Fall of 2019 was when I read about his love for design, architecture and construction. Obviously something we very much have in common! And then after my first visit to his home, I also fell in love with his love for plants. He had house plants everywhere with their own little watering cans and even ladders for several that were high up on shelves.
It didn’t take long in person to connect on our mutual love for beautiful things and I always expressed how much I wanted… but couldn’t quite create with my not-so-green thumb… an overgrown, English garden style yard. I always joke that I want everything to be so huge and overgrown that we have to carve out new sidewalks and pathways for us to walk. I just love the whimsy of overflowing greenery and vines EVERYWHERE!
So back five years ago now, John started working on the wood arches for this trellis. I am going to have him blog a tutorial one day soon but I wanted to go ahead and capture and share these GORGEOUS roses before they’re no longer blooming. The wood arches were kind of a piddle project for him for quite some time because we eventually of course decided to get married and finish out our garage into a two-bedroom apartment for his boys so his work space became that project for a good while.
During this time though, about three years ago now, we purchased these PEGGY MARTIN ROSES at our local nursery called Cofer’s in Athens, GA. He planted one of each side and we just let them grow for the next couple of years. They grew fairly fast but didn’t actually really bloom until this year.
Then last Fall John started to work on the ladder style sides and by early Spring he painted and placed the trellis into it’s final home. And I am IN LOVE!!!!!!! I have detailed paint colors for our home as well as our gate and trellis at the bottom of this post. Trellis tutorial coming SOON!
