Happy SPRINGGGGG-ish! Soooo over the cold and the rain and soooo ready for Spring and Summer! One of the very first things I always want to tackle when then birds start chirping and the flowers start blooming is my front porch! Do you ever have spaces that make you feel a certain way when they’re clean versus when they’re a mess. Mine is my front porch, my kitchen and my car! With a side of my bedroom on occasion depending on just how messy it is. Between being gone a good bit over the last month or two to just being so dang busy, my porch had become a bit neglected. And well, dead…
So, after dropping the girlies off at school one morning, I headed to my local At Homes Stores for a much needed front porch refresh! I’ve been shopping At Home Stores for quite a few years now and I never seem to be able to get out without buying a thing or two or twenty. One thing that I LOVE about At Home Stores is their selection. I feel like they have such a range of styles which fits my mesh of styles just perfect. And they always have the best prices, especially for their annual Spring deals. One design tip I have for creating a unique, stylish space that suits YOU is to do just that… mix up styles! I can never quite define my own design style because I feel like it’s a mish/mash of everything from traditional to modern that lands somewhere around a more transitional style with pops of the unexpected and the whimsical. The extra touch that makes a space feel more inviting, cozy and fun!
One more quick little design tip I have along with mixing up styles is to mix up TEXTURES! I also say that I genuinely think this is the KEY to design. Any one texture, such as soft fabric furnishings and rugs, done over and over again can make a space look overdone but by simply adding in some natural textures like wood or rattan along with the abstract lines of plants or the hard visual texture of metals, the space comes alive with depth and interest.
So with all of that in mind, I set out to At Home Stores on a mission to find some cute new pieces for my front porch that varied in styles and textures. And as you can see, I racked up! They had sooo many beautiful planters and so many outdoor options for accessories, pillows and even throws!
Yep, so so so many good finds! Next step a few weeks later was plant shopping…
One thing I have figured out about myself is that between the fact that I am about as non-green thumbed as they come and I stay too busy to regularly switch out plants, that perennials are where it’s at for me! John had mentioned switching out my front door ferns for trees and I LOVED that idea! Seemed much “easier” to maintain along with the fact that they “should” last forever. Now if I can just take care of watering the rest of the perennials I got… 😉
One last tip I wanted to share before I share my front porch reveal… The sweetest man who owns a local nursery and has taken care of the plant designs out front of my store for the last year or so now shared this tip with me and it has been LIFE for all of my huge planters! He said that if you flip empty plant containers over inside of big planters to fill space, the planters are not only not as heavy but it also prevents wet soil along the bottom that eventually mildews and molds. Genius!
Now here’s a peek at my newly styled porch with At Home Stores!
