She’s baaaack! My sweet little Winnie and her fun girlie girl room are making a blog appearance once again! As you’ve seen over the last two weeks, I am slowly sharing lots of the beautiful images captured by Paige Ewing Photography at our home over the Summer. She came out in September to photograph our home for a bit of a lifestyle shoot and I am just in love with it all. Since I gave you all of the nitty gritty details in “Winnie’s Little Girl Room Design Reveal”, today I wanted to share some of my top tips for creating a playful, colorful and beautiful space that works.
Tip #1: As I’ve said again and again… Start with what you LOVE! It can be anything from artwork to lighting to even a piece of clothing. Inspiration can be found in anything whether it’s a color scheme, an overall feeling or a pattern or shape. For Winter’s room my starting point was the wallpaper. I ordered the paper and cut a small sample to take shopping with me. Although I am not one to “match” most anything, I did a good bit of matching in this room. And for a beginner designer, that’s a great place to start!
Tip #2: Layer! There’s a fine and somewhat difficult to achieve line between what is layered and works and what just reads too busy. For me, I always design in odd numbers. Sometimes it’s a single focal point or sometimes it’s a grouping of three. Visually an odd number is more appealing to the eye and it’s a really great rule of thumb. HomeGoods is always one of my go-to shopping spots for fun, layering accessories.
Tip #3: The “repeat” is everything! I will be blogging LOTS more in 2016 on how to mix prints and patterns but one MAJOR key to mixing patterns is to change up the repeat. A repeat is basically the pattern size. It’s the size of the pattern before it starts over again. That’s my elementary description to be simple and easy to understand. The wallpaper has a somewhat small repeat compared to the stripes in the flooring. The difference in these two repeats makes them work together instead of being busy or dizzying to look at.
So here’s another look at Winnie’s new room!
