To The Window… To The Wall…

I have probably not actually heard that song since my early college years yet it’s the first thing that comes to mind when I say the words window and wall in the same sentence.  Terrible I know.  And please don’t continue on with the lyrics because it goes a little downhill after that.  A lot downhill.

Okay, now on to more important things…  Windows, Ceilings and Doors.  If this article were a novel, the prologue would be my recent blog post “Ponder”ing your Wall Color?  Or if this were New Moon, the other blog post would be Twilight.  Get the idea?  You must read the first one before you read this one.  My ceiling, door and window colors are from the same paint card as Ponder which has some mega undertones.

When I started blogging I had a list in my phone of the first hundred or so articles I wanted to post.  However, that pretty much went out the window when I saw the questions I was getting most.  And since my goal is to help you, I decided to change it up!  One of the questions I have gotten most is about our paint colors so here is PART TWO!

WINDOWS

Over the last year or so, I constantly found myself pinning or screen-shotting (is that a word?) homes with dark window sashes.  I knew I wanted light trim overall to keep the home light and bright but I love the elegance of dark molding.

CEILINGS

As I’ve mentioned before, I wanted a fairly neutral canvas for our home to serve as a backdrop for my fun palette of colors. Using one paint card for most of the home is the best way to create that vanilla for all of the sprinkles.  For all of the ceilings in our home, with the exception of the decorative ceilings, I chose the second lightest paint color on the card, Minute Mauve.

One thing I adore about our home is the open floor plan and the beautiful coffered ceiling in our living room.  Before they had it all painted cream and light taupe so it all just blended into the oblivion.  I wanted it to POP!

DOORS

Another detail on my dream house wish list was dark, almost black, doors.  I’ve always loved homes with this detail and I thought it would be the best way to add some architectural interest to our otherwise boring plain wooden doors.

XOXO, Brittany Hayes

so this may be a totally dumb question – but are your windows a metal/aluminum material (like mine)? If so, what type of paint finish did you use to make sure it doesn’t peel? Your’s may be wood….

I love all of your pics. I would really love to see what you did to your fireplace and bookshelf’s in your two story family room as I have a very similar room with grey walls and am contemplating painting my fireplace and bookshelf a dark grey to contrast with my light grey walls. I also have no idea how to decorate my fireplace as I too have a two story fireplace with a ledge at the top similar to yours. Please share when you have time as I don’t know what direction to take in my new home.

Love the doors!!!! Quick question.. when painting them do you paint the inside as well as the outside? If not, the inside lip of the door, would that be painting black? I also have the bronze hardware on the doors… is that ok to leave that or do you think I have to change to the silver?? Thanks so much

Thank you so much! I would suggest painting the entire door unless it really doesn’t work with the room on the other side. Ours are all painted front and back. If you aren’t doing that, I would suggest keeping the part against the door jamb the same color as the other side. Also, I think you could do any finish on the door knobs although the silver would definitely stand out more. Thanks!

Love the mirror above your tv in the living room. We have the same space in our living room as well. It has been empty bc I never knew what to put up there. Question, is the sunburst mirror a good size and diameter. I just hate to order it and it look tiny up there.

It may be five years later but this week Ab and I It may be five years later but this week Ab and I are finally finishing this tile! 🙌🏻 In my procrastination defense, I WAS going to put a shelf right there but then I changed my mind... 4 years and 11 months ago now 🤦🏻‍♀️ Better late than never! Excited to make 2021 the year I mark stuff off my list! 💗💗💗 What house project are YOU dying to get done this year?
My home is celebrating it’s 113th birthday and A My home is celebrating it’s 113th birthday and Ab and I are celebrating our first successful project of 2021 AND the first completed week of our new blog schedule! Yep, our penny tile mosaic super detailed tutorial and reveal is LIVE on the blog as well as three more posts this week. Pop over and sign up to follow along! P.S. If you’re wondering why I chose to orient the saying this way, I pondered it for a while. In the end I chose this way because we literally never ever use this back door. Anyone entering our home either comes through the front door where this is visible down the hallway, up the basement stairs where this greets them at the top or around through our laundry room or family room. Basically when your 1908 home has a million exterior doors, most end up going unused. HAPPY FRIDAY!!! ❤️ Oh and P.S.S. This wallpaper, trim color, artwork and all of the tile details are on the post! Did a little rustic wood shopping over the weekend Did a little rustic wood shopping over the weekend which meant I just had to snag another cutting board 💗 See it over there looking all cute? I think this one just might be cutting board wall worthy! 😉 Sharing more of my finds on stories today. Several new projects coming soon from my finds too! Also thought I’d take this “cleaned my kitchen just for this picture” opportunity to answer two of my most asked questions... what is your cabinet color and what are your countertops? My cabinets are a 50/50 color mix I created when I was determined to find the perfect blue-gray mix. It’s a full strength, equal mix of SW Stardew and SW Uncertain Gray. My countertops are Calcutta Reale marble and I’m sharing all of my thoughts about marble in a kitchen on the blog! Link in bio!

I cannot even tell you how much fun Ab and I have had on this mini little renovation. #ad Winter asked for a Barbie dreamhouse for Christmas and I just couldn’t hold back. The only problem was that I only had a day or so to go and we were still wrapping twine for chandeliers and spray painting furniture… oops! Thank GOODNESS for @walmart and Walmart+. By becoming a member of Walmart+, you can save nearly 2.5 hours per week with free delivery from your store on orders $35+ (Savings based on 3 store trips per week. Excludes time spent shopping online. $35 minimum order. Restrictions apply.) With our family Christmas party last night and Winnie at home all week, sneaking off to the store wasn’t really an option. I needed a few extra dollhouse supplies and a few things for the party tonight so I hopped online and logged into my Walmart+ account. Sharing LOTS more on stories today! My very own sidekick WONDER WOMAN 👊🏻 This gi My very own sidekick WONDER WOMAN 👊🏻 This girl right here demoed out this entire cabin with her own two hands in 24 hours. A million pounds of junk and carpet and tack strips and everything in between. We just might have had a little fun on stories today documenting some of it too! Now it’s time for DESIGN!!! Eeeeekkkk!!!! If only y’all could’ve been a fly on the wall watching us take these pix 🤦🏻‍♀️ We finally decided, after a million failed attempts with a tiny phone tripod perched on the hood of my car, to video and then screenshot the best moment.
