Selecting Custom Shades with Smith & Noble

Happy Monday! Today I am SUPER excited to share the “secrets” behind the BEAUTIFUL new custom roman shades in our home. This Spring I partnered with Smith & Noble to tackle two sets of windows in our home that were in desperate need of some fabulous window coverings. One room in particular honestly had me completely stumped. So it was covered with a sheet. For six months. And if you know me, you know that kind of stuff makes me CRAZY.

Let’s start at the beginning… Last year we purchased a 112 craftsman “fixer upper”. Not sure if a home gutted down to the studs is considered a fixer upper or basically a re-build or maybe even just a big old headache. Nonetheless we spent one solid year restoring every single detail into our true dream home. We moved in last December and then earlier this year I started my journey furnishing and designing the interior. A super fun journey that I like to call “never complete”. One thing that I love and a teency tiny bit hate are our windows. They are absolutely GORGEOUS and historic and unique and have that amazing rippled glass and all of those fabulous things. BUT they are also really dang tricky. They are not a standard width, not a standard length AND they are so beautiful that I don’t want to cover them up with blinds or plantation shutters or anything heavy like that. SOOO that’s where I was stuck. There were three main spaces that I wanted something extra fabulous for… (for more details on each space, click the room name)

So have you figured out the tricky one? Uhh yes, Addison’s bedroom. Her door totally had me stumped. It is one of my favorite features in her room but it lets in a TON of light right by her bed. I had some ideas but really wanted to see all of my options and get the opinions of a professional in the window covering industry. SO I contacted Smith & Noble and had one of their FREE in-home designers come by to take a peek!

One day while my girls were at school, their local Georgia designer Kathy came by with a ton of samples and her expertise on what would work best in each space. One thing I LOVE about having them come to me is that I can actually see their fabric options in my home with our lighting against our wall colors and wallpapers. Some of the options that I loved laid out on our island ended up not being my faves at all once they were in the actual space.

First, we looked online and she walked me through every style option for roman shades along with the benefits and pricing on each one. I ended up choosing their flat roman shade for it’s clean look and perfect display of the fabric pattern.

Once I decided on a style, we began digging into the hundreds of fabric options! I narrowed each room down to several options and then looked at each fabric in each space while Kathy measured the windows…

Although I am a professional interior designer and do a ton of measuring and ordering on my own, it was so nice to have it done by someone else for once! I always get so nervous when I measure something and then it arrives. I usually get it right but ya know, it’ll be that ONE time where we have spent a lot on something and my measurements are off. But THIS TIME I knew it would be perfect! I chose a fabric and shade style for each space and then we came back downstairs to chat pricing. I had in the back of my mind that something custom like this would take at least 6-8 weeks but I was super excited and honestly kind of shocked to find out that it would be more like two weeks AND they would have someone come install them for us! Poor Mark never gets a break from stuff like that so I was extra excited about that option!

Although I had three rooms in mind, I ultimately decided on completing two for now. Winter’s room already had honeycomb shades I had gotten earlier this year AND I am still working on her bedroom design plan so I held off on hers for now. But I did find options that I LOVED for both the breakfast room and Addison’s bedroom so I moved forward with both of those. Here are the fabrics I chose for each space…
