Can You Believe It? I Painted Our Cabin WHITE!!!
Happy Happy Happy FRIDAY!!! This week has absolutely flown by! AND I feel like once again I have gotten NOTHING done! Ugh! I was chatting in my last post about my not so great start to 2018 and it just seems to be staying at about the same level of productivity. Holding steady at about a zero. Which I do like from time to time but I am so ready to tackle 2018 that it’s driving me nuts! Between snow and traveling and then Addie being out of school several days this week, my to-do list seems to only be mounting. Aaaaand they just announced a “digital day” Monday to slow the spread of the flu meaning no school. Again. I love my kiddos absolutely to death but this momma needs to get back to work!
So today’s post will be short and sweet and honestly I think sometimes pictures speak louder than words anyways SO… Guess what?!? I painted the inside of a house white. Insert the “shocked emoji face”. Well, I didn’t literally paint it myself but I specced a home white. Which is huge for this color loving designer. I had serious doubts and second guessed myself a million and one times BUT I love it. I really really do. And don’t worry! LOTS of color will be coming it’s way very very soon.
You see, we bought this cabin and it was all wood. From floor to ceiling. I honestly do love to incorporate natural wood tones in my work but this wood was orange. Like super warm and not so fabulous ORANGE. I knew I wanted these beautiful whitewashed hardwoods from Shaw Floors and once they were installed the orange toned wood went from bad to worse. But I still seriously STRESSED about this painting thing y’all! Absolutely to death. Painting wood is a huge decision because once it’s done there is no going back! Yes, I know we could’ve re-stained it but that would’ve costed a whole lot more. I was so dang stressed that I even had to get some moral support from my fabulous designer friend Brian Patrick Flynn. Umm yes, totally being a dork and name dropping because he is the bomb. Dot com. 😉 Seriously go stalk his work and his Instagram page and all of that jazz. He is the super handsome and oh so CRAZY talented designer on HGTV who does Urban Oasis and the HGTV Dream Home. He made my entire life a year or so ago when he messaged me about our kitchen saying how much he loved it. I literally think I almost cried. Ha! We then met at a big design event in Atlanta last Summer when I was chosen as a designer for a vignette at the America’s Mart. Mark and I ended up going to dinner with him that evening and we met up once more in Atlanta several months later. AND I have had a crazy huge designer crush ever since. He is literally the nicest guy on Planet Earth. ANYWAYS, so we text each other from time to time and he advised me to go for it. He also has a cabin that he transformed in North Georgia that is STUNNING so I took his advice and PAINTED IT ALL WHITE…
P.S. The bedroom with the green ceiling was not actually the room that was supposed to get the green ceiling SO it will be re-painted white early next week. We have lots of touch-ups so they’re fixing it then. There is a fourth bedroom not shown below that will be getting that fabulous Ming Jade ceiling!

Brittany Hayes says
Thank you SO much Bonnie! Seriously so kind of you to take the time to commment. Means so much! XOXO

Coming along beautifully! Everything you touch turns out stunning! I’m looking for a new kitchen table? Is the one in your cabin from Anthro or some place else? Just wondering what you think of it/if you’d recommend it?
Nicole says
Love that you painted the wood!
Kelly Ward says
Love the painted wood. Especially love the accent wall color in the den. It looks great with the floors. Excited to see it after it’s complete.
Timia says
Looks BEAUTIFULLLLL!!! I’ve never commented before, but I just had to let you know how inspiring your work is… Makes me want to turn my house upside down and start all over lol. All the heart eyes. Can’t wait to see what’s next!!
Meghan Collins says
I cannot wait to see the final! I hope you still plan to make this spot an Airbnb, I would love to stay!!!
kathy olson says
Wow! I can already see your style emerging. It’s fantastic!
Nicole S says
Oh my heart, that black tile is gorgeous! I’m also inspired to paint the beams and planks in my basement white because it makes your cabin look so much bigger! Can’t wait to see the rest.
Julie says
The fireplace stands out so much against the painted wall! Huge improvement! My brother has a lake house in Big Canoe, so I am familiar with the type of building. Whitewashing it all brings it out of its dated look. Fabulous!
Nicole says
I think you made the right choice painting it white. I was actually wondering if you were going to do something about how orange it was especially up against a different color wood floor. Looks great so far! Enjoying the progress 🙂
Amy R says
I love the white! And the accent fireplace wall is perfect! Where do you get Farrow and Ball colors mixed? I’d like to get a paint fan of their colors.
Kristen says
Your bravery with colors and ability to tastefully apply them is amazing. Very inspiring! Just beautiful.
Jess says
SORRY FOR SHOUTING BUT IT LOOKS AMAZING <3
Megan says
I was holding my breath as I scrolled down because I love the wooden cabin look but this is stunning! Can’t wait to see more!
Kim says
Did you take those rattan chairs from your historic wonderland to use in the cabin or get another set ? They are so funky and fun
Patti says
My husband and I bought a cabin in Bent Tree a few years ago that was total wood inside. We promptly painted everything white and never looked back. We love the clean, blank canvas white gives. It makes everything else pop! Great decision Brittany…Love it!

Love it. My in-laws live in Big canoe I love watching your flips to see all the potential that their house could have . I’m so glad you linked that backsplash tile because I think its exactly what I have been looking for.
Donna says
I really love it all so far! Looks is somu h better white and lighter. Incredible! Can’t wait to see everything done. You are so talented. That dining light is my favorite one of all of them right now. I wish it would go on sale. Ha!
Julie Brown says
I love the cabin and your house. I painted my Addison’s room Alabaster because of you. So, I want to paint the living spaces all white, warm not yellow. I had decided on Simply White before seeing this post. My question is what sheen do I use on the trim and walls. I don’s there to be a difference in color. What did you use?
Antoinette says
Everything you design is beautiful! I enjoy following your journey! When are you looking for it to be ready to rent??? My daughter is getting married in the area in October and Beginning our search for a home to rent.
Dafna Brown says
So beautiful. We purchased our cabin over a year ago and have done nothing because I’m so nervous to take that leap. In addition, I can’t deep to find the “style” of this house. I wanted to include a couple pics but looks like I cannot. Is there a way to do so?
Thanks!
Corbie says
I’m totally blown away!! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!! Can’t wait to see more!!
Olena Reid says
I LOVE your white cabin and am enjoying your posts of its transformation! So pretty!
Andrea says
I have a similar home and have been agonizing over colors. It’s an aframe home with beams and wood. Dated coloring. Seeing yours has me sold on white!!! Did you do this yourself? I have very high ceilings. Did you use a sprayer? How long did it take you. Thank you, Andrea
Catherine Griffin says
I’m in the process of remodeling my cabin with similar wood and getting estimates to paint the wood. What process did they do on the wood? Did you seal the knots before painting? Every painter I’ve spoken with has a different idea and I’m having trouble making a decision.
Courtney says
I am having the same thoughts as I have a lot of wood in mine with knots. What did you decide to go and how?
As says
Thinking of painting interior of log cabin and would love painting tips. Any advice?
Amber Delozier says
Did you use oil based or latex paint?
Monica Marshall says
Love what you did. My ex-in laws used to have a cabin in Gatlinburg, TN and it was all orange like yours and I used to sit around and imagine it painted white. Glad to know others have thoughts like that as well!
Christine says
Hi Brittany. Your cabin is simply gorgeous! I am also getting ready to do some major renovations to a cabin & have a question. I’m torn between all white windows or adding a contrast to my white walls and doing dark windows. I see in your picture you have both. We’re the white ones just not painted yet or did you do a mix of window/door colors. Thanks so much!!
Raven Brown says
How did you get it ready for paint and I’m scared of height so I guess I would have to get someone to help with that. How long did it take you. I hate wood walls ceilings it’s just old and ugly. Haven’t bought the house yet but trying to figure how much it’s going to cost to get everything done before I bid on it.
LINDA NOVAK says
Hi brittany, can you tell me what kind of paint you used for the stair treads i lovethe way yours came out……thankyou
Gina says
You just don’t know how much I want to paint my cabin white but my husband loves the wood look! I’m trying to find a compromise.. I love what you’ve done! Can’t wait to see the final result!
stephanie says
I love the white paint! Did you use a sprayer? How did you prep and paint the wood on the stairs? We are buying a house that has similar woop panel, stairs and beams throughout and are planning to do the same thing!
Tim Yanka says
We are considering painting our dark log walls but are hesitant because we’ve been told that the logs have to breathe (water vapor must be able to leave). Your work looks great and I’m wondering if you’ve noticed any problems three years later. I would also like to know how the wood was prepped and what kind of paint that was used. Thanks for any info you can provide
Cynthia says
I have a log cabin house. I have been wanting to paint the logs. I did sand and whitewashed the ceiling which my husband thinks it looks green. I wil go over it with a flat white. I would love to go with a warm grey on the logs. Not sure how to begin ,and I am terrified. Any suggestions
Amanda says
Wow!!!! I am thinking of painting our pine roof slats white, but was scared. Not anymore!! It looks sooooo good and fresh!
Debbi Vaughan says
We are getting ready to paint our A line ceiling soon. But I wanted to go with something a touch warmer. Just a little off white. Do you think it will have to same affect?
Valerie says
What sheen did you use on the wood ceilings?
