How discouraging! Too bad the clear coat made it look orange; what I love about the wood is the ‘ashy’ look you described. Hopefully one of the stains this morning will be perfect. Good luck 🙂 I enjoy living vicariously through your renovation and am taking notes for when we come back Stateside and (Lord willing) my dad builds our rustic/mountain dream home!
Gosh I know! I actually thought I was being easy for once! Thanks so much and hoping today samples work better. I created a little mix last night. I hope everything works out with moving back to the states! How exciting!
That’s how I feel about light fixtures. I know what I want. It just doesn’t exsist. Can I just design exactly what I want and have it made?!? Considering hubby is in the lighting industry you’d think I could find something. Blah…….
The house is coming along so beautifully! Can wait to see your invented stain. 🙂
The house is looking beautiful already. What is the paint color you used on the walls in the living room? I love how they are light & bright, but still a good contrast with the white trim.
I am finding that as I get older, I have gotten decidedly more picky. Or maybe just more confident in what I want. It scares me sometimes because I never wanted to be “that person” but maybe it isn’t that bad after-all??
Btw LOVE everything I am seeing in your photos so far!
Fortunately, stains are very easy to play with to create your own custom color!! We recently had the floors redone in a “new to us” house we purchased. We wanted dark but not too dark floors and ended up going with a mix of 2/3 French Provincial, 1/3 Dark Walnut, which was perfect! However, I admit I secretly considered having them clear coat it!
Trying to recall from a very early post/vlog of OHW – wasn’t there a sort of built-in (or perhaps it just fit really well in the nook) butler’s pantry? I seem to recall that while you were removing it, you had hoped to salvage it and restore and use it somewhere? Any updates on that piece and how it might fit into your current design plans?? (If I’m crazy and my brain completely made that up…please ignore me. HA!)
Maria (I think?) from Dreamy Whites (instagram dreamywhiteslifestyle) had this issue with her sanded down wood flooring and I think she used woca white lye. They were black oak floors. I’m sure you’ll come up with something great!
If this helps, I prefer the Varanthane brand over Minwax. I really dislike Minwaz’s finish and performance. As always, custom mixing two or more colors is the way to go to create a custom finish.
HUGE congratulations for you exterior and interior paint color choices… could not be more gorgeous. Your house is stunning and it’s so kind of you to share your paint colors and decor choices.

Have you thought about using tongue oil instead of poly?? Much more authentic restoration look.
