They Nailed It! Or Maybe Stained…

WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU CONTINUE TO FOLLOW ALONG ON OUR JOURNEY?

Never Miss A Blog Post!

They did it! They did it! After a whole lot of sampling, sanding and re-sampling, our 1905 hardwoods look freaking AMAZING. Being Mrs. Picky paid off 100% and I am thrilled with the result! Today’s post is going to be a little short and sweet but photo heavy. I thought today would be a full blogging day until I realized I had to meet three crews plus a freight company at the house, drop off fence plans for the Historical Preservation Committee for approval, finish ordering lighting and oh yea… schedule to take my car BACK to the dealership after it was there for four days last week because the “check engine” light came on yesterday AND my visor literally fell and was dangling in my face WHILE I was driving. Ugh sorry rant over. First, let’s take a trip down memory lane to where it all began.

These images are from my February post titled “The Big Plan” which gives a full tour of “Our Historic Wonderland” when we first purchased the historic home…

Boy we have come such a LOOOONG way that it’s hard to even remember the days we could walk through the walls. Keep on reading and scrolling for an update tour!

From almost the day we purchased the home, I envisioned light and somewhat white-ashy hardwoods. I knew I wanted a not so red-orangey look yet thought I may be saving that look for the pre-finished hardwoods we needed for the rooms without original hardwoods. I did not realize that once they were cleaned and sanded down, they would look like this… (Cue the angel bells)

I think I did the interior designer happy dance when I came by and saw them. Is it sad that I really do get that excited??? Mega dream floors. But then as you may remember from my last post, they added a clear sample coat and it looked like this…

clear-stain-poly-hardwood-flooring

Crazy huh?!? How is that clear? Still confused. Beautiful for some projects out there but not definitely mine. So I decided to play chemist and make my own stain color. And here is what it is…

We shall call it “Wonderland White”

Pickled White Stain w/ 4Oz of W1- White (per one gallon)

And they got to work!

Once the ONE coat was wiped on and wiped off, they added a coat of poly and VOILA!

(for the playroom ceiling, they did THREE coats for a more whitewashed look)

Now take a look at where we are post flooring restoration!

So pretty! I love the ashy color of the floors. Are you doing carpet in the playroom area? Sorry if I somehow missed this if you already shared what you were planning to do.

It’s so gorgeous!!! Do you think it would produce the same effect on new Red Oak? Can you explain your concoction? What brand was the Pickled White stain and was the 4 ounces of W1-White paint and what brand? I’m wanting kind of a gray ashy look.

You definitely made the right call on the floors – they are stunningly beautiful!!! As much as I love my dark wood floors, they are extremely high maintenance as far as keeping them dust free and clean. I am in the process of doing some floors over, and am definitely leaning towards a much lighter and softer look. This post has been very helpful, can you give a few more details on the products used?

Wow! I completely agree with the prior post about you branding this color! Its going to be huge!
That’s the one thing I hate about wood floors and cabinets is the orange! (And I’m a Clemson girl, I love me some orange! lol!) But I think that’s why dark wood floors/cabs have become so popular, its the only way to cut the orange. Seriously, call a lawyer and have it branded!

If you’re wondering why I chose to orient the saying this way, I pondered it for a while. In the end I chose this way because we literally never ever use this back door. Anyone entering our home either comes through the front door where this is visible down the hallway, up the basement stairs where this greets them at the top or around through our laundry room or family room. Basically when your 1908 home has a million exterior doors, most end up going unused. HAPPY FRIDAY!!! ❤️ Oh and P.S.S. This wallpaper, trim color, artwork and all of the tile details are on the post!
