Sincerely, The Least Indecisive Person Ever
WANT TO MAKE SURE YOU CONTINUE TO FOLLOW ALONG ON OUR RESTORATION JOURNEY?
I have a feeling that you totally won’t even believe me when I say that I truly am the least indecisive person ever. Our entire family makes fun of us both because we do things so quickly. We see a house, once, for five seconds, and we say “yep, we’ll take it!” You want us to go to Europe next week? “Sure! Sign us up!” I get a random desire to wallpaper the hallway and it’s being installed the next day. And then came this damn house. Excuse my language because I honestly never cuss but you probably won’t even believe that either. Basically this a post of firsts.
I also never actually intended on posting a million posts just about exterior colors. It’s just that the last four weeks have consisted of the following in no particular order… Work on the new house, work on designing our new showroom, let the kids drag every toy into every room while I do so, take the kids to school, pick the kids up from school, cook dinner, run errands, get a phone call that the house is showing… oh crap now I have to rush home and clean for four hours. And repeat. So out of those amazing options, blogging about the new house seems like the obvious choice since I do blog my life. So welcome to my life ;-).
When I became a blogger this amazing thing happened where my love for designing and re-designing our home became my career. Had I known this existed I would’ve jumped on this train YEARS ago! But here I ride now and am working on my biggest project ever. And I want it to be amazing. All kinds of amazing. And if you know me, you know that I also don’t like doing what is “normal”, or “in style”, or popular or trendy or any of that jazz. I like to do my own thing and to be honest, I like to make people say “woah”. So as much as I actually for once wanted to paint something white, I am secretly glad that it virtually looked really ugly (see that post HERE). Oh and not virtually as in almost. Virtually as in my computer painted my house. And it was amazing. So then I decided to do what logically comes next and paint a house black. Well almost black.
So here she is yesterday and today…
If you’re new to the painting craziness, yes this is in fact my fourth indecisive exterior color choice post. I have now purchased 15 sample quarts, spent over $150 and have created an abstract painting on the side of our home testing colors. Basically all I want is something dark, bot not too dark. Charcoally but not too grey. A hint of blue but not too blue. Black but not actually black. And amazing. Definitely amazing. Is that too much to ask?!?
So yesterday I popped by and added two more colors to my ombre testing wall…
So after closing one eye while covering colors with my hand, staring at them all for fifteen minutes each, I then narrowed it down to two… Abyss and Soot. The first and third options above. While watching my chaos unfold, our amazing painter then offered to spray a wall to give me a better sample area. YESSSSSS! I went by this morning to take a peek and to choose the final color…
Yet I STILL cannot decide. I LOVE Soot which is the right side option but going that dark is SCARY! So then our amazing painter offered to prime our entire house in that color this afternoon. Clearly I am crazy. And he is amazing. If I still can’t decide after the entire house is painted, please have me admitted somewhere. Oh and yes, I am a designer. Mark asked me about this yesterday. I am an INTERIOR designer. Thank you.
Sincerely, the LEAST indecisive person ever

I know exactly what you are going through, I am currently in the process of painting mine evening dove, it is half way done, and I think I like it, not sure I have to wait till its all done with the white trim, EEEEKKKK.
Deborah says
Definitely SOOT! Loved it from the beginning!
Karen says
Still love Soot. Honesty, Abyss looks like faded navy paint. It almost has a purple undertone, at least on my monitor.
Your painter sounds amazingly patient. LOL
Sarah says
I agree SOOT! I think the Abyss looks like the house was painted 5 years ago and the color has faded in the sun. Although, that might be because it’s next to the darker Soot color. Good luck, that is a hard, stressful decision.
Kelli Alfreds says
SOOT. Thought I would say Abyss, but it’s Soot for me!
Christy says
Soot!!!
Lisa Forsythe says
Soot for sure!!
Jill says
I have thought Soot from the start!
Carrie says
I know you wanted white but then got talked into the other colors because they are more classic for the style of house, but honestly I don’t think charcoal or darker colors are quite so classic either and will end up making the home more contemporary also. I would just go with what you like. If you are having such a hard time with the color maybe you aren’t completely sold on it. Also are you redoing the roof? I don’t think the color of the roof looks good with the darker paint colors.
Laurie Pagano says
SOOT all the way! Even though I didn’t initially vote for it, it’s def the color!
Colleen says
Yeah, abyss looks like faded soot! So maybe you’ll get both eventually! ha!
I think soot looks good with the roof color.
Miranda Anderson says
I still say GO FOR THE SOOT! The abyss looks definitely more blue to me & a good deal lighter than the soot. The soot (in my opinion) covers EVERY thing that you just listed, blue but not too blue, charcoal but not too gray & dark but not too dark! I especially think because your house is the large size that it is, you can go a bit darker and it doesn’t look too dark. Hoping for peace of mind for ya soon girlie!!!
MissHazel says
Soot!! Soot!! Soot!!
Sarah says
Definitely soot!
Meada Spencer says
SOOT all the way!!! Go big or go home right
Kristen says
Love the soot! That’s been my vote from the beginning… Such a rich, gorgeous, multi-faceted color!
Brie says
100% Soot! It will fade over time so go darker now. I painted my house a dark grey with blue undertones last week and I wish I went darker!
Cathy Clark says
Soot all the way!!! The other is just too common—SOOT will make a beautiful statement!!!
Michelle says
I love SOOT
Katie Jones says
Guuuuurl, you’ve got ANALYSIS PARALYSIS! Hubs and I will buy or sell a house in t-minus four seconds too, but choose cabinet hardware? That’s a six week decision involving spreadsheets and a Facebook poll. The Soot looks amazing in the color visualizer and on your sample painted wall. I’m drooling over the complementary color vibe with the red brick. Go for it!! 😉
Vearnail says
I love the SOOT! They are both beautiful colors so go with your gut!
Kim says
I REALLY REALLY love the soot color!! I think that’s the way to go. But whatever you choose you always make it look stunning and amazing!!
A. Boland says
Soot! Seeing it on a larger surface seals the deal!
KaraLee says
SOOT!!!
Patty says
Definitely Soot. It looks amazing. Don’t be afraid of it being too dark. It will look stunning!
Robin says
Soot for sure! It was my first pick.
Tina says
Go for Soot! i painted my house black and its faded pretty quickly over the last 3 years, wish I had gone darker!
Jen says
I’m with ya! We’re remodeling now and I don’t understand why when we have our dream home and I afraid and can’t make a decision on paint!
