Happy Hump Day! Today’s room reveal is quite possibly one of my very favorite reveals to date… Our Elegant & Fun Vintage Boho Dining Room Reveal! You guys know that I am a girl that LOVES to change things up but I also love when I can call a room complete. I always say that I sometimes have the hardest time completing a room in my own home. I feel like I can create a lot of different designs for other people but to nail down one that I want to stare at “forever” and is my own personal mix of elegant and fun sometimes takes some time. Finding a balance between modern and vintage and whimsical and colorful and pattern filled that all feels suitable for a 1905 historic home AND coordinates with surrounding rooms can be a process. A process that I LOVE!
When we neared completion on Our Historic Wonderland this time last year, our former home that had been sitting on the market for almost ten months finally sold and required us out in a mere ten days. What had been a fun, leisurely restoration hit warp speed completion and we decided to just get it done and leave the remaining design details for later. One question I am asked most often is how I go about starting a design plan. For my own home and with client projects in the past, I have ALWAYS started with a source of inspiration or something that I adore. In this case… THE WALLPAPER! More on that shortly…
Here’s a quick peek at our dining room when we first purchased OHW…
So I knew very early on in construction that I wanted two large chandeliers over our dining room table so those were wired and chosen months before we completed the home. Double chandeliers have always been on my dream home bucket list. Which is literally a list in my phone that I highly advise starting if you plan to renovate or build one day. It’s a much more concise list than a Pinterest board and the perfect starting point for the day you are able to put your visions to action. Next I knew I wanted to create a dramatic ceiling. Ceilings are something I personally LOVE drawing attention to in my design style particularly when they are tall or unique. With 12′ ceilings I felt it was the perfect opportunity to create drama with a soft black ceiling and dark beams. So once we moved into OHW, here is what our dining room looked like with those two details complete…
Several months after we moved in, I stumbled upon that thing. That inspiration piece I absolutely had to have…the wallpaper! Obsessed at first sight! I remember the day Mark came home after it was installed. He has never ever cared what I do around the house so I typically don’t even show him stuff until it’s done. He always says that it usually turns out better than he envisions so our marriage is just better that way ;-). Yet on this day he walked in and did a double take. He said “Is that the aftermath of an atomic bomb?!?” Totally a History major thing to say. No dear… it is clouds 😉
With the gorgeous wallpaper hung and a beautiful new table in place, I started on a rug and chair hunt. Oh and I always get asked about the table so here you go… I found it at the Anthropologie outlet (yes it exists and it’s heavenly and I’ve even blogged about it RIGHT HERE) and our countertop company fabricated a gorgeous marble slab for the top. It’s now a favorite piece in our home! For the rug and chairs, I love to mix up styles so the room needed a dose of super traditional as a juxtaposition to the funky wallpaper. I found these simple, traditional parsons chairs and a timeless beige/moss bordered rug that added a little color and a little warmth to the floor. I also LOVE that it is an indoor/outdoor rug because it is super easy to clean! Also, these chair covers can be removed for easy cleaning as well! Finally, the end chairs. I had played around with the idea of a bench at one end but still felt it to be a little too traditional overall for me. I also felt that the room needed more texture. Rattan adds such a great natural texture and the space is so large that it could totally pull off a huge dramatic end chair look. One glance at these rattan balloon chairs and my vision for an elegant and fun, vintage boho dining room was complete! Well, those chairs AND a little stop at HomeGoods for the mirror, cabinet and accessories! Take a peek at our dining room today…
